Be Clear on Your Why: Lesson 1 of 31
Your why is not a specific job or field; it's akin to your personal mission statement.

Surprise! Surprise!!!
You're getting two letters from me in one week - ain't that awesome???
Well, yes, it's my birth month so surprises are bound to happen. Hehe đ
Last year, as I crossed over to the third floor of life, I had intended to write and share some life lessons. However, I never got around to it. Fear and self-doubts, amongst other factors, played their part.
But not this year; we've declared it: #nogreeforanybody.
For the next 30 weeks, every Monday, I'll be unveiling 1 lesson I've gleaned along my journey - a total of 31 life lessons.
My hope is that at least one lesson inspires you â take what resonates, leave what doesn't, and feel free to share. We're all on this journey together.
But for now, here's the first lesson:
Be Clear on Your Why: Lesson 1 of 31
Dear Reader,
Have you ever felt like you're wandering through life without a map?
The first lesson that has been pivotal for me on my journey is being clear on my why.
Stephen Covey advises, âBegin with the end in mind,â and Simon Sinek emphasises âStarting with why.â My personal why has been my guiding star through career transitions, from HR to strategy, operations, change and transformation, to now focusing on leadership and organisational culture.
Your why is not a specific job or field; it's akin to your personal mission statement. This is crucial because while a job or field may limit you, your why serves as a North Star â offering flexibility to explore diverse interests while staying grounded in your purpose.
If you haven't uncovered your why yet, let's do a little exercise:
Close your eyes (okay, maybe not if you're reading this on your phone), and imagine youâre at your own funeral. Yeah, I know it sounds morbid, but bear with me.
Picture your loved ones eulogising youâtalking about the path you chose, your work, your relationships, your qualities, your choices. What would you want them to say? What do you want your life to have been about? What does the impact youâve left look like? Imagine what they would say if you had lived your life true to your deepest values, doing what really matters to you rather than taking the safe or easy route.
Take the time to deeply reflect on these questions and then write out your eulogy in detail; this can aid you in uncovering your why.
I have been fortunate to be clear on my why â to be an anchor for people on their journey to becoming the best versions of themselves. It has been my compass on this wild and wonderful journey we call life.
Stay tuned for the next 30 life lessons!
Wishing you courage and clarity on your path,
OâSeye
